“Hey, sweetie!” Hayley enthused when Precious arrived at the restaurant. “You look stunning.”

“Thanks.” Precious smiled and tried to mean it. “Happy birthday! Open it when you get home.” She winked as she handed Hayley a card and gave her a hug. Precious hoped Hayley put the $20 voucher inside to good use.

“Aww, thank you! And I got you a gift, too!” Hayley stepped aside and nodded toward a man talking to two brunettes. “His name’s Sean, he’s twenty-eight and single!”

Deflation punched Precious in the chest as she realized, instead of being able to spend the evening with her friends pretending she didn’t care about being single, she would now have to talk to this random guy.

Given that she was looking for a very specific type of man—a daddy to care for her—she was pretty sure this was going to be a bust.

“Go on. Say hi,” Hayley said, pushing Precious toward Sean.

Precious stepped forward and waved a little. He turned and stood up. Over six feet of muscle. Precious guessed he was a cop or in the military. He was black, with a shaved head and twinkling, warm eyes.

“Hey! I’m Sean!” He was way too bouncy. Precious knew straight away if she lost her shit, he’d flee like an injured puppy.

“Hi. I’m Precious.” She wondered if she could text Mandy and ask her to call with a fake emergency.

“Let me buy you a drink. What do you like?”

“Diet Coke, please,”

“With...?” Oh, no. Precious threw a plea to Jesus that he wasn’t one of those guys who thought women ought to be drunk.

“Just Diet Coke,” she replied, firmly. He went to the bar and Precious turned back to Hayley, who gave her an encouraging look.

“See? You guys are made for each other,” Hayley insisted, before turning to greet someone else.

Precious felt like she’d been thrown to the wolves.

“Here.” Sean handed Precious the drink. “I picked something good for you.”

Instantly wary, Precious sniffed the drink. She frowned.

“What is it?”

“Double vodka and coke. You shouldn’t be drinking that diet shit, babe, you should love those curves!”

Precious handed him back the drink, turned and left.

“Hey! Wait up!” He chased after her.

“Leave me alone!” she snapped. Immediately, she regretted looking back and seeing his face. Kicked puppy, just as she suspected.

“What did I do?” he asked. She heard the disappointment in his voice and decided to spell it out for him.

“First, you gave me a choice when you asked me what I’d like to drink, but you didn’t respect that choice because it didn’t fit with what you wanted. Second, you didn’t even think about why I’d asked for my preferred drink, you just assumed. Oh, yeah, fat black woman clearly has body image issues. Obviously, she’s trying to lose weight! I just prefer diet coke. And I don’t drink when I’m driving.” She pulled out the keys to her Audi TT.

“I’m sorry about the vodka. I didn’t know you were driving, you just looked so wound up and defensive, and I thought it would help.
